In the Bhāgavata Purāṇa (Bhagavata Purana), Uṇmāda (Unmada) was mentioned as the gaṇa (gana or clan) of the evil gods. In ancient India, the exorcising of the evil spirits or Bhūta (Bhuta) was a part of any kind of holy rituals. After the death of the demon woman, Pūtnā (Putna), Mother Jaśomatī (Jasomati) tried to exorcise this Uṇmāda (Unmada) besides the other evil spirits by performing the Viṣṇunāma Kīrtana (Vishnunama Kirtana or the recitals of the names of Lord Vishnu) to keep Naralīla (Naralila or one who performs in his human incarnation) Kṛṣṇa (Krishna) safe from the future dangers. It was narrated in the Purāṇa (Purana) that as Prajāpati (Prajapati) Brahmā (Brahma) created gods, sages, humans and demons, similarly at the moment of creation, he also created evil spirits and the clan of Uṇmāda (Unmada).
