If Aśauca (Asaucha) is due to birth or death, brāhmaṇa (brahmana) should restrain themselves from yāga (yaga), homa or nityakarma ( daily rituals) for ten days. For the same reason, kṣatriya(s) (kshatriya) will do the same for twelve days, Vaiśya(s) (Vaisya) for fifteen days and Śūdra(s) (Sudra) for one month. After that all may resume their normal work as per the rules of scriptures. If one meets an unnatural death by weapon, water, udvandhana, poison, fire of by waterfall, aśauca is to be maintained by those sharing the same gotra and the samānodaka (samanodaka) those who can share the same water with the dead, for one day only.

There is no aśauca for the death of a sincere brahmacārī (brahmachari, celebate), one who has resorted to vānaprastha (vanaprastha), or some upkulavaṇika brahmacāri (upakulavanika brahmachari) or someone fallen (patita). In case of a fallen person’s death, there is no need of cremation, collecting the remains or funeral rituals. Even there is no need of shedding tears, offering piṇḍa(s), or post-funeral rites. If someone commits suicide by fire or taking poison, there is no provision of aśauca , fire-ritual or offering piṇḍa(s) for him.


If a boy without teeth dies, one night of aśauca is to be maintained by some sapiṇḍa (sapinda) who is ‘nirguṇa‘. If one dies before upanayana, saguṇa sapiṇḍa has to take a bath, and if death occurs after upanayana, it is advised to take a bath, too.

If a boy-child dies after birth, within a time of Aśauca, it is to be Aṅgāspṛśyatvayukta Sampūrṇāśauca (Angasprsisyatvayukta Sampurna), Sadyaḥśauca (Sadyahsaucha) for the siblings, but if the sibling is nirguṇa (nirguna), there will be one more day of Aśauca after ten days.

If the king under who people live, dies, that Aśauca is called Sajyoti Aśauca.


If a daughter, given away in marriage, dies at the father’s house, the father has to perform Aśauca for three nights. In case of the death of a woman who had been the wife of another man, or the death of the son born of her womb, three nights’ aśauca is advisable.

In case of the death of Acārya (Acharya), Aśauca is to be performed for three days. If an aunt (father’s sister) dies, Aśauca is to be performed for three days.If a distinguished person kike dies st someone’s own house, he has to maintain aśauca for three nights.Three nights’ aśauca is to be performed in case of the death of father-in-law or mother-in-law.
