The dictionary-meaning of the term ‘śapfa’ (sapha) is ‘hoof’. So, ‘Ekaśapha’ (Ekasapha) means some animal with one hoof. In Garuḍapurāṇa (Garudapurana) it is said that six kinds of animals such as Gardabha (Ass), Aśva (Aswa; horse), Gaura, Śarabha (Sarabha) and Camarī (Chamari; Yak) are known as Ekaśapha.
