Ugratejā (Ugrateja) was one of the eight thousand names of Śiva (Siva). He was the center of the teja or power. The source of all the power of this earth, the star, Surya or Sun is also ignited by a part of the powerful rays of Śiva (Siva). He was himself as powerful as thousand suns. As the layman cannot tolerate the power of Śiva (Siva) or Mahādeva (Mahadeva), he was known as Ugratejā (Ugrateja). The commentator Nīlkaṇtha (Nilkantha) also analysed the meaning of the name, Ugratejā (Ugrateja) in this way-

Sa eva Ugratejāḥ duḥsahasparśaḥ.

It is to be noticed that in the chanting of the thousand names of Śiva (Siva), Ugratejā (Ugrateja) was followed by the name of Mahātejā (Mahateja). The stars like the sun, the moon and the other stars are ignited by attaining the power from the intolerable, extremely powerful Īśwara (Iswara) and consequently this earth gets her light from the stars. So this powerful Īśwara (Iswara) was also named as Mahātejā (Mahateja)-

Na tatro Suryo bhāteā na Chandra-tārakaṁ
Tasya bhāsa sarvaṁmidaṃ vibhāti.
